Simon Hobbs LGBTQ Financial Advisor

I’m a gay financial advisor based in Palm Springs, working with LGBTQ clients across the Coachella Valley and throughout the United States.

I do not believe LGBTQ people automatically need an LGBTQ financial advisor. We fought too hard for equality. But our lives do not always fit conventional assumptions about relationships, retirement, care or inheritance.

Good financial planning starts with understanding the life a person has actually built, the people who matter to them and what they want their money to accomplish.

Financial Planning That Understands LGBTQ Lives

We are all radically different.

Treating everyone equally isn’t the same as truly understanding an individual.

Our experiences can also affect the way we think about money.

Coming out can carry a financial cost. Discrimination may affect how we perceive financial risk. Homeownership remains significantly lower for LGBTQ adults. For some gay men now approaching or already in retirement, the AIDS crisis may still influence how they think about their futures.

Money itself is rarely the real objective. It’s the fulfillment of each individual’s unique set of values: personal safety, freedom or family can mean very different things depending on the life you’ve lived.

Why LGBTQ Financial Planning Can Be Different

Two dads laughing with their daughter at the kitchen table

Marriage, Partners & Property

Marriage can affect taxes, property ownership and inheritance. Unmarried partners or couples where one spouse is not a U.S. citizen may need additional planning to create the protections other married couples receive automatically.

Estate Planning & Chosen Family

Many clients will ultimately use most of what they’ve accumulated to take care of themselves. But others will leave substantial estates.

The people you’ve come to consider family may not be your legal family. Beneficiaries, trusts, powers of attorney and healthcare directives can help make sure your wishes are recognized.

Building & Safeguarding Wealth

Career interruptions, delayed homeownership, lost family support and discrimination can affect how wealth is accumulated and how financial risk feels.

Children

Adoption, surrogacy, IVF, previous relationships and nontraditional family structures can create financial and estate-planning issues that deserve deliberate attention.

LGBTQ Retirement Planning for the Life You Want

Retirement planning is about more than having enough money to stop working.

Work may have been one of the first places where you felt accepted, respected and able to be yourself. Retirement will likely mean building a new life for 30 years that can replace that identity and those relationships.

For LGBTQ adults, it may also mean thinking carefully about who will care for you and where you want to live.

Why Work With an LGBTQ Financial Advisor?

Shared sexuality doesn’t make someone a better financial advisor. Competence, integrity and knowledge matter more. But shared experience can remove a potentially tedious layer of explanation.

Our past need not define our future. But having lived through the fight to marry the love of your life, for example, or AIDS, might make it easier to get to the heart of the matter.

Not shared sexuality. Shared understanding.

Financial Planning Built Around You

Understanding you is only the starting point.

The next step is turning that understanding into a financial strategy built around the life you want.

I spent 18 years at CNBC explaining investing and complex financial trends. I want you to understand why you’re doing something, not simply be told what to do.

Contentment with life often comes from fully understanding the decisions you make.
